That’s what you’ll experience when you encounter Essence Band, a Bahamian musical collective that has become a staple in the archipelago’s live entertainment scene. With roots in the church, the band blends soulful spontaneity, professional polish, and island rhythm into an electrifying sonic journey that feels more like a destination than a performance.

Formed eight years ago by Victor Johnson, a visionary creative and son of the Pentecostal church, Essence Band was born from a desire to create music that defied traditional live-band conventions.

“I realized that God had blessed me with a very unique gift of creating sonic soundscapes,” Johnson shared. “The only way I could express that fully was by forming my own band.”

Much of that sonic DNA was shaped in church. With a deep Pentecostal influence, Johnson and many of his bandmates — three of whom are pastor’s kids — learned to flow with feeling rather than structure.

“In my church, you could have a program and never even touch it, because when the Spirit moves, that’s it,” Johnson recalled. This ethos carried into Essence's creative process. The band rarely uses a set list. Instead, Johnson reads the room and crafts the night’s music on the fly.

“Every show is a live jam session. No two are ever the same.”

It’s this unpredictability and raw, emotional delivery that’s earned the band a devoted following. “One fan told me, ‘Every time I see you all, I’m blown away. It’s never the same show twice.’ That means the world to me,” said Johnson.

But Essence Band didn’t start with sold-out rooms and celebrity gigs. In its early days, the band, then a trio, played to empty chairs in a small piano bar.

“We had maybe 20 songs on rotation for a four-hour night,” Johnson recalled. “Once we ran through them, we just started again.”

What set them apart even then was their discipline. Treating the band like a full-time job, they practiced three mornings a week and performed three nights. That professionalism, coupled with a democratic band structure, where all voices are heard, allowed their chemistry to flourish both on and off the stage.
