POV: Try reformer Pilates on the beach at Salt Studio
In the winter months, the evening reformer Pilates class begins as the sky glows bright with the pre-sunset tapestry unique to western New Providence.
Few things are perfect, but a sunset class at Salt Studio on Love Beach on New Providence is pretty close. With cooler temperatures on the horizon for The Bahamas during the winter months, we thought it would be the perfect time to take a different approach to fitness and mindfulness.
The proximity to the ocean does something to the senses and the body overall. It’s as if an invisible switch is flipped, allowing you to breathe a little deeper, relax a little further, and allowing your mind to wander.
I approached the evening reformer Pilates class with anticipation and curiosity, slightly concerned about my ability to keep up with the class as a relative beginner. Each 55-minute class can accommodate six people on an intimate, shaded platform, elevated from the sand of the beach.
You certainly don’t have to be flexible to enjoy a reformer Pilates class, as the full body workout also builds core strength, balance, and the mind-body connection. That was the assurance from Salt Studio Pilates instructor Brittany Haschek, who brought the concept to life by blending two of her loves: the breathtaking beaches of The Bahamas and Pilates.
Gentle house music set the tone of a sunset happy hour at any beach club around the world, but instead of bottles on ice, it was time to prepare both mind and body for toning and conditioning.
My breath slowly began to mimic, then match the soft whisper of waves kissing the shoreline. As Haschek guided us through the workout, I felt more aware of the balance within my body – how one small shift in speed can have a ripple effect on the overall outcome. The ebb and flow of the waves is the backdrop as I felt my core muscles contract and release. Sometimes you need to step outside the gym to breathe the salt air and focus on the smaller, deeper muscles that build a strong foundation for a healthy life.
Whether you are a beginner or advanced in Pilates, the unique experience of a session on the reformer with the salt-laced air will leave you wanting more.
The evening reformer class brings peace and balance that can align you for a relaxing evening ahead, but that’s just a drop in the bucket (or ocean) for Salt Studio. You can find their full schedule at saltstudiobahamas.com with a range of classes including mat Pilates, sculpt, and yoga, as well as private and group classes.
