The Bahamas makes aviation history with global appointment

The Bahamas has taken a historic step onto the global aviation stage. Dr. Kenneth Romer, director of aviation and deputy director general of tourism, has been officially appointed to the board of the International Association of Airport Executives (IAAE). He is the first Bahamian, and the first person from the wider Caribbean, to hold such a position.

The appointment was confirmed during the IAAE’s board meeting in Warsaw, Poland, on October 19, 2025, marking a proud and unprecedented milestone for the region.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Kenneth Romer on his appointment to the board of the International Association of Airport Executives,” said Prime Minister Philip Davis, KC. “As the first Bahamian and the first from the Caribbean region to serve in this role, this is a proud moment for our nation. Dr. Romer’s leadership will help shape the future of aviation, strengthen regional connectivity, and create new opportunities for Bahamian talent and industry.”

The IAAE serves as the global arm of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), the world’s largest professional organization for airport leaders. With over 12,000 members across more than 900 airports and aviation agencies worldwide — including in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America — the association plays a critical role in driving innovation, education, and collaboration across the aviation industry.

Dr. Romer’s extensive experience and leadership in the aviation industry makes him an invaluable addition to the board,” said Heba Gouda, vice president of global operations at AAAE.

“We are confident that his insights and contributions will further strengthen IAAE’s mission to advance global airport management excellence.”

In his new role, Dr. Romer will help guide the association’s strategic initiatives and represent the interests of airport professionals on an international scale — a responsibility that underscores the growing influence of The Bahamas in global aviation.

“I am humbled and honored to contribute to charting the course of global aviation, while amplifying the voice and punctuating the presence of The Bahamas, as the world continues to mark the manner of our bearing,” said Dr. Romer.

His appointment stands as a signal of The Bahamas' growing leadership in aviation, and a proud moment for the Caribbean in global transport and tourism
